Flower care

How to care for your flowers

A few minutes of care keeps your flowers looking fresh for longer, even in Dubai's heat.

The basics

  1. 1

    Trim the stems

Cut 2–3 cm off each stem at an angle with a sharp knife or scissors before putting them in water, then again every two days.

  2. 2

    Use clean water

Fill a clean vase with cool water and add the flower food if included. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Change the water every two days.

  3. 3

    Find a cool spot

Keep flowers away from direct sun, air-conditioning vents, heaters and ripening fruit. A cooler room at night helps them last longer.

Tips by flower

  • Roses

Remove the outer guard petals if they look tired. If a head droops, re-cut the stem and stand it in deep water for an hour.

  • Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas drink through their petals too. If they wilt, submerge the whole head in cool water for 30 minutes, then re-cut the stem.

  • Tulips

Tulips keep growing and bend towards the light. Use a tall vase with a little water and turn the vase each day to keep them straight.

  • Orchids

Water once a week by soaking the pot for 10 minutes, then let it drain fully. Bright, indirect light; never leave the roots standing in water.
